Overview

Daniel Mminele was the first Black African CEO of Absa Group and Absa Bank Limited—a landmark appointment at one of the country’s largest JSE-listed financial institutions. He focused on repositioning the group following its separation from Barclays, advancing transformation, and strengthening Absa’s role in supporting inclusive economic growth across the continent.

He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director and Chair of Nedbank Group Limited and Nedbank Limited, one of South Africa’s major financial institutions.

He is also a Non-Executive Director of the Youth Employment Service NPC, and a Senior Fellow at Salzburg Global Seminar, challenging current and future leaders to shape a better world. These roles reflect his active involvement in socio-economic development and global policy dialogues. Daniel is currently Chair of the B20 Task Force on Energy Mix and Just Transition.

Daniel was previously Chair of Alexander Forbes Group Holdings Limited and Alexander Forbes Investments Limited. In 2022, Daniel was Head of the Presidential Climate Finance Task Team, driving the Just Energy Transition Partnership and the development of the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan.

Before joining Absa, he held two five-year terms as Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank overseeing financial markets, international relations, and key internal operational clusters; he was a Board Member of the Monetary Policy, Financial Stability, Risk Management, and Prudential committees.

Earlier, Daniel built a solid international banking foundation with roles at WestLB (UK & Germany), Commerzbank, and African Merchant Bank in project and structured finance.

He brings deep cross-sector expertise in:

• Banking governance & audit oversight – chairing boards and audit committees within regulated financial services in emerging markets

• Macro‑financial & central bank leadership – shaping monetary policy, financial stability, and institutional risk frameworks at the Reserve Bank level

• Climate finance & energy transition – leading national-level financing strategies supporting decarbonisation and green investment

• Executive leadership & strategic turnaround – managing large banking groups during global economic uncertainty and leadership transitions

Educated in banking at City of London Polytechnic, and at Germany’s Sparkasse Paderborn, he was honoured with Germany’s Order of Merit in 2018 and has received the ABSIP Lifetime Achiever Award (2019).

Daniel is recognised for combining global financial intellect with purpose-driven governance. He is respected for principled leadership, resilience, and impact across both commercial and societal spheres.
